Sleep is the one thing nobody can sell you. What a supplement can do is make the wind-down a little easier, quieter mind, softer landing, fewer 3am ceiling inspections. That is a much smaller promise than most sleep aids make, and it is the only one worth believing.
This is a ranked list of the UK's sleep supplements, written by a brand that makes one of them. Ours is first, because we think it is the best-built nightly formula on the shelf and we will show our working. Everything else here earns its place by being genuinely good at something, and we say where it beats us.
One ground rule. Formulations and prices change; every statement about another brand comes from their public product pages at the time of writing, so check the current carton before you buy. The only figures we can stand behind permanently are our own, because we publish the batch tests.
Best overall, and the one we make.
DREAM is built for the specific failure most people actually have: not an inability to sleep, but an inability to stop. You are exhausted, and your brain is still drafting tomorrow's emails. So the formula is a wind-down, not a knockout.
400mg Reishi extract, the mushroom traditionally taken in the evening, and the one we wrote about in the power of Reishi for a restful sleep, with sage, magnesium for normal nervous system and muscle function, and vitamins B5, B6 and D to reduce tiredness and fatigue so the morning is not a write-off.
Pros
Cons
Best evening ritual, and also ours.
A sparkling peach can with 1,000mg Reishi, ashwagandha and chamomile, plus magnesium and B6. It is on this list because for a lot of people the real intervention is not a capsule, it is having something to open at seven o'clock that is not wine. See the sleepy girl mocktail for how people actually use it.
Pros: the ritual is the point and rituals get kept; alcohol-free; low sugar; genuinely nice.
Cons: lower mushroom load per serving than a capsule; costs more per day than a pill; you have to keep cans in the fridge.
Best if the answer is simply magnesium.
For a large share of people, the useful part of any sleep supplement is the magnesium, and Wild Nutrition does that one job with an unusually well-explained format and a company that has been transparent about sourcing for years.
Pros: single-purpose and honest about it; authorised claims available; well-tolerated format.
Cons: no mushroom or adaptogen if that is what you came for; premium price for a common mineral; no wind-down ritual attached.
Best single-ingredient reishi, grown in Britain.
Soil Association organic reishi, grown and dual-extracted in Somerset. If you want reishi and nothing else, with a supply chain you can actually see the end of, this is the honest answer.
Pros: UK-grown fruiting body; organic certified; traceable from log to bottle; tincture is quick and needs no water.
Cons: single ingredient, so no supporting minerals and no authorised sleep-adjacent claim; a dropper is easy to forget; limited batches.
Best for buying it tonight.
Sometimes the winning feature is a shop you can walk into. H&B's sleep range is competent, frequently discounted and easy to return. We know the shelf, our CBD range has been on it since 2020.
Pros: immediate availability; regular multibuy offers; low risk to try.
Cons: specification varies enormously between lines, so read the carton not the shelf tag; rarely any published batch testing; some lines lean on sedating botanicals rather than nutrients.
Included because you will read about it.
Melatonin is over the counter in the US and prescription-only here, which is why so much online sleep advice does not apply to Britain. It is a genuine intervention for circadian problems such as shift work and jet lag, and it is a conversation with your GP rather than a purchase.
Pros: the best evidence base in the category for circadian misalignment.
Cons: not legally available off the shelf in the UK; not designed for general "my brain won't switch off"; needs medical oversight.
If your mind races at bedtime, take ours and give it three weeks of consistent evenings. If your evenings are the problem rather than your nights, buy a case of Liquid RELAX and open one instead of a glass of wine. If you suspect the whole issue is a mineral gap, buy plain magnesium and save your money.
And before any of it: the unglamorous stuff still outperforms every jar on this page. A consistent wake time, daylight in the morning, and the last coffee before two. Our timing guide covers where a supplement fits around that.
A ritual, a recipe or something we've learned in the undergrowth, plus first dibs on new pours and stockist news. No noise, ever.
